“Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flow charts. It is about one life influencing another.†John C. Maxwell
I’ve worked with so many engineers over the years who say something like:
“I’m not cut out to be a leader.â€
“I’m not leadership material.â€
“I’m letting people down because I’m not really a leader yet.â€
But when we peel back the layers, a different truth emerges:
They’re already leading—they just don’t see it yet.
Let me share a story that illustrates this.
“I Don’t Think I’m Ready for Leadershipâ€
A while back, one of my clients told me about a project he had recently completed.
- He led a cross-functional project that saved the company over six figures in just a few months.
- He mentored a junior engineer who had just joined the organization.
- He helped redesign a process that improved efficiency and reduced long-term costs.
After hearing all this, he said:
“But I don’t think I’m ready for leadership.â€
Why? Because he didn’t have a formal leadership title.
When we looked back at the project—and many others in his career—it became clear:
He was already leading.
He was guiding others.
He was solving meaningful problems.
He was improving processes and delivering measurable impact.
The only thing missing was the job title.
Leadership Is Not a Title
Leadership isn’t something you’re “given.†It’s something you demonstrate.
Leadership is:
- A mindset
- An orientation
- A way of being
- A commitment to making things better
- A willingness to support the people around you
This client was already operating as a leader long before he got official recognition. And the same is true for so many engineers.
You Don’t Need to Be Charismatic to Lead
Another thing holding him back was believing he wasn’t outgoing or charismatic enough.
But here’s the truth:
- You can be introverted.
- You can be quiet.
- You don’t need to be the loudest voice in the room.
- You don’t need to be “the life of the party.â€
Some of the most effective leaders listen far more than they speak. Leadership is rooted in:
- Impact
- Ownership
- Service
- Thoughtfulness
- Helping others succeed
If you do those things, you’re already leading.
Stop Waiting for the Title
Maybe you can relate. Maybe you’re waiting for a title to validate the leader you hope to become.
Let’s flip that script:
Leadership starts with how you show up today.
You lead by:
- Taking initiative
- Supporting others
- Stepping up when something needs to be done
- Owning your work and its outcomes
- Making things better in your sphere of influence
When you commit to leading where you are, the titles follow—not the other way around.
If You Want Help Growing as a Leader
If you’re working on your leadership identity—whether you already lead people or not—I’d love to support that journey.
Send me a message and let’s talk about how you can grow into the leader you want to become, regardless of your current role or title.
Because leadership isn’t about what’s printed on your business card. It’s about who you choose to be.
