Break Through Analysis Paralysis By Taking Action

Break Through Analysis Paralysis By Taking Action

“In the absence of clarity, take action!” ~Philip McKernan

Last week I shared about journaling as a tool for getting out of your head and increasing clarity for your career and life.

Journaling and other tools can be huge to uncover and get clear on the things that are most important to us. Yet there is no way to get a crystal ball, eliminate all uncertainty, and have a step-by-step path to getting exactly where you want to go.

At some point, you have to stop thinking about what you want to do, and take action to make something happen. Even if you lack clarity. Even when things are uncertain.

But here’s the cool thing – when you take action, it’s an exercise in helping you gain more clarity. You’re trying something, having conversations, and gathering experiences that give you more insight.

What sorts of actions can you take? Here are just a few:

  • Have a conversation with someone in a different role/industry to learn more about it
  • Take on a new project to see if you would enjoy that sort of work
  • Enroll in an intro course on a subject you are curious to learn more about
  • Talk to a manager about opportunities for growth in your company and where he/she sees you as a good fit moving forward

These and similar actions can help you take steps towards getting that clarity you want through experience. Some things can only be learned this way.

And if something doesn’t work out, no problem. You learned something along the way and you can do it better or differently next time.

Keep taking action. Keep iterating. It’s a process.
