Build Your Career Like an Engineer: How to Prototype Your Next Move

“The road to success is always under construction.” – Lily Tomlin

Engineers prototype almost everything. Before a final product ever hits the market, there’s a process of testing, iterating, and refining. Rarely do they go straight from idea to finished solution. That would be risky AND unrealistic.

Yet when it comes to life and career, we often feel like we need to have everything figured out from the start. We think we need a five-year plan, a perfect path, or a guaranteed outcome before we take the next step.

But what if we approached career decisions like engineers approach product design? What if we gave ourselves permission to prototype?

Let’s explore how to do exactly that.

What Is Career Prototyping?

Career prototyping means testing ideas in low-risk, high-learning ways. It’s about gathering information and experience before committing to a full-on change. You don’t need a five-year plan—you might just need a five-day plan.

The key question to ask is: What small action can I take this week to learn more about a direction I’m considering?

There are two easy ways to get started.

1. Prototype Conversations

These are simple, low-commitment informational interviews with people who are doing something you’re curious about. Think of them as data-gathering conversations.

You can ask:

  • What does a typical day look like?
  • What tools do you use?
  • What challenges do you face?
  • What do you love about your work?

You’re not asking for a job, but rather exploring possibilities. These conversations can reveal whether a particular path matches your interests, values, and strengths. And they often lead to new connections and unexpected opportunities.

2. Prototype Experiences

Once you’ve gathered some information, the next step is to try something out.

You don’t have to quit your job or make a huge leap. Instead, find a small, low-risk way to test the waters.

Thinking about moving into leadership? You could mentor a junior colleague or take a leadership role in a volunteer setting. Considering a career change? Try a side project, freelance gig, or shadowing opportunity. Want to switch industries? Take a course or attend an industry event to get a feel for the space.

These mini-experiments allow you to act without overcommitting. They help you test your assumptions, discover what you enjoy, and build new skills—all while reducing the fear of failure.

Redefine Success: It’s About What You Learn

The goal of a prototype isn’t perfection – it’s insight. Success isn’t measured by whether the prototype “works,” but by what you learn from it.

Each conversation, each mini-experience, is a chance to gather data. That data helps you make better decisions and move forward with more confidence and clarity.

You’re not waiting for your future to show up. You’re actively building it, one intentional step at a time.

Take the First Step This Week

So what can you do this week?

  • Is there someone you can reach out to for a conversation?
  • Is there a small project or experiment you could try?
  • Is there a way to raise your hand and test a new skill or direction?

Don’t wait until everything is clear. Take a small step. Learn something. Adjust. Repeat.

Because the truth is, your future isn’t something you find—it’s something you build. One prototype at a time.
