With all of the potential action you can take to advance your career, how do you possibly decide what to do?
By creating a strategy. A strategy that is different from what you’ve done before and what everyone else is doing.
Sure, you can sit back, relax, and wait for opportunities to come your way, but it might also mean you’re waiting for quite a while or end up in a place you don’t want to be. That’s not probably the result you want, so let’s talk strategy!
Doing Things Differently Will Yield Different Results

If you’ve been applying for jobs constantly with the same resume and not getting any interviews, you need to do something different.
If you’ve been trying to do your job well in hopes that someone else will recognize your efforts and give you a promotion, but aren’t getting any results, you need to do something different.
That’s what strategy is all about. Recognizing what is not working, identifying something new, and driving towards a different result.
Otherwise, doing the same thing over and over will land you the same old results.
What can you do differently to land an interview opportunity? What conversations can you have, projects can you take on, or relationships can you grow that might help you get a promotion?
What can you change to reach towards your goals?
Make that your strategy!
Strategy For Career Success
The idea of “strategy” is a central piece to my larger Next-Level Engineering Career Formula, which is meant to provide the big picture for making intentional career growth. Strategic actions are where you need to get pragmatic about the actions you take.
At the same time, your strategy should be informed by foundational items to focus on your long-term goals and your motivations to reach them. Just taking actions for the sake of it will lead you to blind action – that’s not what we’re looking for!
Knowing what to adjust in your career and knowing when to be flexible is essential in creating an effective strategy. By doing so, you will stand out amongst everyone and you will have a much greater chance to be hired or promoted in your dream job.
