“If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.” ~African Proverb
Change is a constant. We all need to change and adapt to new challenges, opportunities, and situations in life.
We make changes in habits, thought patterns, and behaviors that we want to be different.
Yet too often we try to make these changes alone, without the help of others. This is a bad idea.
The Power of Proximity
There is a simple rule called the Proximity Principle. Essentially, it suggests that we form interpersonal relationships and become more like those we are close by.
The people we spend the most time with rub off on us.
Now, sometimes we don’t always have a choice of who we spend time with in every circumstance. And if you’re not happy with the influence they are having on you, you have some choices to make.
You can change your environment – a new job, new living situation, new friends.
You can also intentionally adjust where and with whom you spend your time.
Bring people into your life that are doing things you want to do.
Spend time at positive and inspiring events, have conversations with mentors, take on a new team project, or hire a coach to help you through a challenge/opportunity.
Change the people you spend time with, change your life.
But don’t try and change alone.
