“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” – Albert Einstein
Data shows that each job opening attracts 250 resumes from candidates interested to get hired. But from this number, just 5 people get invited for an interview and of course, only 1 person gets the job. This means that you have a 2% chance of getting hired if you do a search by submitting your resume to every job posting you see.
Do Things Differently
Now, think about ways how you can enhance your job search. If you do the same thing over and over, then you will expect the same result as before. It’s already challenging enough to just be in the pool of prospective candidates and what’s worse is that you are hanging—just waiting for what’s going to happen next. This is the type of scenario that you would want to avoid since time is a valuable resource and should not be wasted.
The main key here is to do things differently. Make yourself unique. In order for you to stand out to others, you need to step up the game. Build relationships, may it be on LinkedIn, through email, or if possible, go directly to the company, their events, and many other things as long as you take a huge lead among other competitors.
Proactive Approach
There are a lot of sort of ways to take this huge lead. One is to be proactive in your job search. Connect with people in your field and talk to them about your interests and your goals in your career development. Ask them directly if they have any openings in their companies. Make yourself stand out by sharing what you can contribute to their company and what value you can add to enrich it.
Develop these relationships so that they can become advocates for you and you will be easily recognized.
Make your mark, and these people will be the first ones to showcase your talent and refer you to the best companies. It will surely require effort from you to always look for ways how to improve your skills through continuous learning.
