“Once your mindset changes, everything on the outside will change along with it.” – Steve Maraboli
Your mindset is a driving factor that can empower your life and your career. Research consistently demonstrates how your mindset can affect your behavior and attitude, which then impacts the results you get in life.
So it makes sense to spend some time assessing your current mindset and charting a course to make improvements if you want to achieve important goals.
Analyze Your Current Mindset
To make progress we start with where we are right now, but understanding your own mindset can actually be quite difficult.
There are free mindset assessments that you can take – those can be a good start. I also recommend spending some time in reflection or meditation to understand your innermost thoughts and the motivation behind your actions.
Becoming aware of yourself, feelings, and motivations gives you power to make changes and improvements. If you can alter your mindset, the changes you make in your behaviors will be more lasting and impactful.
How Your Mindset Affects Your Engineering Career
Your mindset changes not just what you do but how you do it.
For example, if you are going into a job interview, you can choose to have a very self-focused mindset. You can feel that you deserve the job and they need to see how amazing you are so they make the decision to hire you.
On the other hand, you could decide to have a mindset more focused on the needs of the employer and the interviewer, seeking to understand why they are hiring for this position. This would allow you to showcase your abilities to be a solution to problems they are needing to solve, and be a part of their success.
Do you see the difference? I would hire the second person every time.
Channeling Your Positive Mindset
Mindset is a choice. Every day and every moment. You can choose to focus on the negatives in your life, the fear, the uncertainty, and the pain, or you can look for goodness in the world. You can choose to live in a way that is all about you, or you can choose to consider and be compassionate for others. You can focus on avoiding failure or creating opportunities to succeed.
Where your focus goes, energy flows.
Put your energy into positive mindsets to create a foundation of success for your engineering career!
