Find Your “Happy Place” by Looking Beyond Your Career

“I’ve taken my destiny into my own hands and I’m in a happy place” ~Charlie Simpson

Months ago, I had a client who was really struggling with enjoying his career, and thus his life.

As we got started working together, I asked him to come up with his “definition of success” for our time together.

His answer: “find my happy place.”

That seemed pretty nebulous and subjective, but we both went with it and accepted the challenge.

Over the course of about three months, he uncovered many patterns of thinking about himself, other people, and the situation he was in that were unhelpful. He allowed himself the time and space to look inside and considered what he truly enjoyed about his work and what elements he wanted to create in his career moving forward.

This introspection opened him up to more gratitude for the situation he was already in, and he started thriving.

He found ways to mentor more junior employees. He was assertive in his conversations and actions with his coworkers and bosses. He took on challenging projects and worked hard to make them successes. He connected more deeply with his family and those he loved.

In the end, he changed himself. He created his own happy place, even though nothing big actually changed about his career.

All because he got clear on what he wanted – those things started becoming his reality.

Do you know what you want? Are you clear on what you enjoy and what makes you happy?

If something needs to change, sometimes it is important to change your situation.

But sometimes what needs to change is you.

We can all choose to be happy, today.
