How to Network Early, Often, and Effectively

“Networking is not about just connecting people. It’s about connecting people with people, people with ideas, and people with opportunities.” – Michele Jennae

Many people today have misconceptions that networking can never be something they are good at, it’s a waste of time, and it’s only for friends or close circles. Do not let these misconceptions take you away from the truth about networking.

Networking is critical to your success in your career and life! Yet when you are thinking to expand your network with someone, do it not to get something out of them but to build a meaningful relationship that you can contribute to. First seek to give! Don’t just be a “taker.”

There are many ways to connect with people. Send connection requests on LinkedIn, ask to have a conversation, and extend an offer to help in some way. Make it genuine and sincere at every interaction.

Be sure to take your conversations away from simply digital conversations in LinkedIn, email, or other platforms and towards a personal conversation. This will supercharge your ability to cultivate relationships that you can contribute to. You never know who might be instrumental in helping you navigate to your next opportunity, so treat everyone with respect and admiration along the way.
