Are You a Human Being or a Human Doing?

Are You a Human Being or a Human Doing?

“Life is not about finding yourself; it’s about creating yourself.” —George Bernard Shaw

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, the distinction between being and doing often becomes blurred. Are we defined by our actions, or is there more to us than just the outward things we do?

Perhaps the most annoying thing to me about this is a question that commonly gets asked when we’re getting to know people is, “What do you do?”

I’d rather ask the question, “Who are you?”

A question like this digs into the essence of human experience, challenging us to reflect on where our focus lies. So let’s explore the significance of both being and doing, highlighting the importance of both for personal growth and fulfillment.

Understanding Being vs. Doing

Being and doing are two facets of humanity that are intricately intertwined. While doing pertains to our actions and behaviors, being examines deeper into our identity, beliefs, and mindset. Both aspects are essential, yet striking a harmonious balance between them is key to leading a purposeful and fulfilling life.

The Importance of Being

Being encompasses our core identity, values, beliefs, and mindset. It is about how we show up in the world and the authenticity with which we engage with ourselves and others. In our fast-paced society, it’s easy to become consumed by endless to-do lists and external expectations. However, taking moments to simply be—quieting the mind, reflecting, and connecting with our inner selves—is equally crucial for personal well-being and growth.

The Power of Beliefs and Mindset

Our beliefs and mindset shape our perception of the world and influence our actions. In essence, being drives our doing. When we operate from a place of clarity, embracing empowering beliefs rather than limiting ones, we align our actions with our values and aspirations. By cultivating a positive mindset and embracing growth-oriented beliefs, we pave the way for meaningful change and transformation in our lives.

Finding Balance

While doing is essential for achieving our goals and realizing our potential, it must be complemented by being—nurturing our inner selves and fostering self-awareness. Striking a balance between action and introspection allows us to live authentically and purposefully. By integrating moments of stillness and reflection into our daily lives, we cultivate a deeper understanding of ourselves and our purpose, guiding our actions with intention and clarity.
While our actions shape our reality, our identity and mindset underpin our sense of self and purpose. By honoring both aspects of being and doing—cultivating presence, self-awareness, and authenticity while taking purposeful action—we unlock the full spectrum of human potential. Embracing this balance, we navigate life’s complexities with grace and intention, fostering personal growth, fulfillment, and meaningful impact.
