“Our intention creates our reality” – Wayne Dyer
Have you ever looked at your life and wondered, “Is this it?”
It’s a heavy question—and one that echoed through my mind over and over again a few years ago. On the surface, everything looked great. I had a good job with great people. I was earning well. I had a supportive family, a home, and was enrolled in a respected MBA program.
I had checked all the boxes.
But on the inside, I felt completely lost.
That confusion, that internal disconnect, is more common than most people realize—especially for high-performing professionals like engineers. I’ve since worked with hundreds of people in similar situations who felt the same way. They weren’t unhappy in a dramatic sense. But something just didn’t feel right.
They had achieved “success” but felt unfulfilled.
Why You Might Be Feeling This Way
If you’ve found yourself asking, “Is this really all there is?” you’re not alone. Often, that question arises when we’ve been following a path that was laid out for us, instead of consciously choosing a direction for ourselves.
We go with the flow, take the jobs that come to us, follow the expectations handed down by others, and before we know it, we’re far down a road we never intentionally chose.
That was my story, too. I had taken the path that seemed safe and successful, but I had never truly asked myself what I wanted or what kind of life I wanted to build.
It wasn’t until I started asking those questions that things began to shift.
The Power of Living with Intention
Living with intention means taking back control. It means no longer letting your life and career simply happen to you. Instead, you become an active participant in designing your path forward.
Intentionality brings clarity. It helps you align your actions with your values. It gives your work and life deeper meaning and purpose—not just surface-level success.
That shift in perspective changed everything for me. It’s why I wrote my book, The Intentional Engineer. It’s also why I now coach professionals through the same transformation—because I know what it’s like to be successful on the outside but uncertain on the inside.
You don’t have to stay stuck in that space. You can shift toward something more aligned and fulfilling.
A Small Challenge to Begin Your Shift
If you’re resonating with this, here’s a simple challenge. Do one small thing today—just one—that you wouldn’t normally do. But do it with intention.
Choose something that reflects your values, something that breaks your usual routine, even in the smallest way. It could be reaching out to someone for a meaningful conversation, taking a break to reflect, saying no to something that doesn’t align with your priorities, or yes to something that does.
Whatever it is, take that step not just to do something different, but to move in the direction of who you want to become.
That’s how change begins. Not through giant leaps, but through small, intentional steps repeated over time.
Final Thoughts
You can design your life and your career to reflect your values, your purpose, and your vision—not just what others expect from you.
So if you’re feeling that subtle (or loud) whisper asking, “Is this it?”, know that you’re not alone. And also know that there’s a way forward.
Start by taking back your intention. Start with one step today.
