Sometimes we want to separate who we are at home and at work. For many people, the current pandemic crisis has made that nearly impossible as millions of people are now working from home.
So certainly we need to set up boundaries and rules so that we can focus and be productive, but I had an experience recently with my kids that helped me learn that I needed to do better at being present and available for the people I love most.
I wasn’t listening, and my daughter could have been very hurt as a result of that if I had not finally turned to listen.
Do I ever do that with other people in my life? You bet. Working on that.
Since then, I’ve been working with my wife and kids on setting appropriate boundaries during work time, but I’m also personally working on being able to be fully present and listen to my family when I am with them.
When I’m a better listener at home, I’m also a better listener for those I work with. The skill is universal in every aspect of life. I’m truly working to make that an important piece of who I am as a person.
