How Newton’s 1st Law of Motion Can Change Your Engineering Career

How Newton’s 1st Law of Motion Can Change Your Engineering Career

“An object in motion will stay in motion, and an object at rest will stay at rest, unless acted upon by an outside force.”

This is Newton’s First Law of Motion. Essentially, any movement (or lack thereof) we have is constant unless something changes it.

Why does this matter?

If you are finding yourself in a situation in life that you want to change because you feel stuck or “at rest” in your career, life, growth, etc., the critical factor lies back in Newton’s law:

You need an outside force to help you make the change you seek!

So often we set goals for ourselves, but unless we share, partner, and are fiercely accountable with someone else, these goals are rarely achieved.

It is too frequent for me to talk to an engineer who has big goals and ambitions they want to achieve in their engineering career, but they are trying to do it all alone. That’s often a recipe for disaster!

Find someone to be the “outside force” (maybe an engineering career coach like me, *nudge *nudge) that you need to speed up, slow down, or change course. The accountability and support you get from them can be invaluable.

You probably have something that you have wanted to do or try that’s been sitting in the back of your mind forever – a project, a dream job, a new business, a family activity. Whatever it is, if that idea remains at rest, it will stay there unless you do something about it. So why wait?

Choose one simple action you can take today that would move you closer to that goal. Tell someone else what you’re going to do and ask them to hold you accountable.

If possible, invest in yourself to get focused coaching to really accelerate!

Then go do what you committed to. Now – instead of being at rest, you are in motion. Thanks Isaac Newton, you’re a real pal.
