“Your vision of where or who you want to be is the greatest asset you have. Without having a goal it’s difficult to score.” ~Paul Arden
I don’t typically devote entire blog posts to book reviews. This is an exception. It’s rare that reading a book or learning a principle actually causes massive change in me. But it did in this case.
I recently had the opportunity to get a pre-released copy of a new book by author Benjamin Hardy. The book is titled Personality Isn’t Permanent. I am not being dramatic when I say it has changed how I look at myself, what I’ve accomplished in the past, and what is possible for the future.
Like many engineers, I found myself easily getting locked in to a technical identity of what I was due to my career choice. I was led there by aptitude and personality tests along the way.
I liked concrete answers. I liked to be right. I liked to problem solve. I liked things that were objective.
That’s not all bad, but the identity I took on also avoided creativity, art, writing, and anything that seemed subjective. I avoided things that involved opinions of others.
I realize now more than ever that I have the opportunity to reframe those thoughts and experiences and choose who I want to become rather than be defined by my past experiences. I can actually change my personality and become a new type of person.
That concept is extremely powerful when you think about it.
Who you are tomorrow doesn’t have to be who you are today.
So who do you want to be?
I invite you to go grab a copy of Personality Isn’t Permanent. Let me know what you think. I can’t recommend it highly enough. I’m sure I’ll be sharing more thoughts and insights from what I learned in future posts and videos as well!
