Feeling Misaligned in Your Career or Life? Here’s How to Get Back on Track

“Live in alignment with your values, and everything else will follow.” – Noah Turner

Have you ever felt like you’re living someone else’s life? Like you’re moving through the motions—checking boxes, doing the work—but still not making progress in the direction you actually want to go?

That uneasy feeling could be a sign that you’re out of alignment. When your actions, goals, and values are not working together, it can create stress, confusion, and a lack of fulfillment. But the good news is, alignment is something you can build with intention.

Let’s explore what alignment really means, why it matters, and how you can start finding more of it in your career and life.

What Is Alignment?

Alignment happens when your values, goals, and actions are in sync. You’re in alignment when the work you do and the decisions you make reflect the things that truly matter to you. You’re out of alignment when your actions feel disconnected from your deeper sense of purpose.

This matters because alignment brings clarity, momentum, and meaning. Without it, even success can feel hollow.

So how do you find better alignment? Here are three steps you can take right now.

1. Know Your Core Values

To live in alignment, you first have to understand what your values are. Your values act as a compass—guiding your decisions and helping you stay true to who you want to become.

If you’ve never identified your core values before, it’s worth setting aside time to do that. Aim for three to five values that feel central to your identity. These might include things like growth, integrity, creativity, family, or contribution.

There are plenty of great exercises online, or you can check out the process in my book, The Intentional Engineer. Once you have your values clearly defined, you can begin to filter your choices through them. Ask yourself: does this decision align with what matters most to me?

2. Audit Your Energy and Time

Alignment isn’t just about time—it’s about energy. You might be spending hours on something, but if it drains you or leaves you feeling disconnected, that could be a sign you’re out of alignment.

Try doing a quick audit. Look at your calendar and ask yourself: Am I giving time and energy to the things that align with my values and goals? Where does your attention naturally go? What energizes you, and what doesn’t?

This kind of reflection can reveal areas where you might need to make adjustments—big or small—to realign with what you care about.

3. Make Micro Adjustments

You don’t need to overhaul your entire life to get back into alignment. Sometimes, small shifts can make a big difference.

If your current job doesn’t fully align with your values, you don’t need to quit tomorrow. Instead, ask yourself what you can adjust. Could you take on a different kind of project that excites you more? Can you find ways to express your values outside of work—through volunteering, creative hobbies, or community involvement?

Alignment doesn’t always require drastic change. Micro adjustments, made consistently, can help you move closer to a more meaningful and authentic life.

Align Your Life and Career

Living in alignment isn’t just a feel-good idea—it’s a powerful framework for building a life and career that truly fits who you are. It’s about making choices that reflect your values and lead you toward the person you want to become.

If you’re feeling stuck, out of sync, or unsure what direction to go, that’s okay. This is something I help people with all the time—finding clarity, rediscovering purpose, and making intentional changes that align their life and work.

Remember to take small steps, reflect on your values, and trust that realignment is always possible.
